In Montgomery the seating on buses was segregated. The drivers were white and often bullied blacks.

Rosa sat in the first row of 'colored' seating. As the bus filled Rosa was asked to move. She refused.
The Supreme Court has decided in Browder v Gayle that segregation on buses is unconstitutional.
Rosa was arrested on 1st December 1955 for refusing to give up her seat to a white man.
A one day boycott of the buses on 5th December turned into almost a year. with 90% of the black population involved.
The MIA took the case to court saying that segregation was illegal. They succeeded and integrated buses started in 1956.
