  • As Dmitri Mendeleev was teaching at the University of Saint Petersburg, he started to create a book on organic chemistry in 1861. 
  • When Dmitri started creating the book, he found that two groups know as halogen elements and alkali metals had a similarity in the progression of atomic weights.   
  • After studying more groups, he put the elements in atomic weight order and made the first draft of the periodic table.

  • Mendeleev even predicted where some elements would be, even though they had not been discovered.  
  • When people learned of his discoveries, he got praised and received many awards. He is known as the father of the periodic table.
