  • In 1774, Spanish explorer, Captain Juan Perez sailed from Mexico to the Pacific North west and claimed all of the Pacific coast.
  • English

  • Later in 1775, A small piece of land in the North West was claimed for Spain by Captain Bruno Heceta.
  • Just a hours after claiming the pacific coast, Captain Heceta and his crew were ambushed by Quinalt tribe warriors.
  •  The American Revolution (1777-1783) forms the context for both the Spanish and English to explore the Pacific coast. They both are traditional enemies.
  • British explorer (James Cook) names Cape Flattery for Britain on March 22, 1778 
  • In 1790 Spanish explorer Manuel Quimper explores the strait of Juan de Fuca as far as the San Juans.
