  • After Wolff looks through Einar's papers and doesn't find any clues to the gold, he decides to kill Sig's little sister Anna to get answers.
  • Atonment
  • Why didn't you kill me?
  • Sig realizes that he is not afraid of dying, He is not about to give everything his father every worked for to a stranger. He tells him to shoot him, because Sig has truly overcome his fear.
  • Return
  • Wolff reveals that his gun doesn't even work. Seing a chance to escape, Sig gets his dads gun, but gives it to Wolff, asking him to shoot him. However, due to his knowledge of guns, Sig realizes that his dad's old gun can't handle being fired one more time. Wolff shoots, and blows his hand off.
  • At this point in the novel, Sig realizes what it's like to have a loaded gun pointed at you. He realized that it isn't right to take a mans life, and that if you do, it lives with you for the rest of your life. After having his hand blown off, Wolff runs away and crashes into the snow.
  • Because I realized that no one deserves to die.
  • After Wolff is imprisoned, Sig finally gets time to mourn his father's death and attend his funeral. If this ordeal taught him anything, it is that human life is precious and very fragile. Sig returns to normal life with a newfound respect for humans and takes this respoect with him for the rest of his life.
