Storyboard Text

  • The Green Knight comes in, and proposes a challenge
  • "And so all I ask of this court is a Christmas game, for the Yule is here, and New Year's, and here sit young men; if any man holds themselves, here in this house, so hardy, so bold in his blood- and so brainless in his head- that he dares to stoutly exchange one stroke for another, I shall let him have as my present this lovely gisarme, this ax, as heavy as he'll need, to handle as he likes, and I will abide with the first blow, bare-necked as I sit" (lines 65-73). 
  • Gawain volunteers in King Arthur's place
  • "I beseech you, sire, let this game be mine" (lines 123-124). 
  • Sir Gawain chops off the Green Knight's head
  • "The fair head fell from the neck to the floor of the hall and the people all kicked it away as it came near their feet" (lines 158-159). 
  • The wife attempts to seduce Gawain, first with kisses, then a ring, all of which he denies or returns to the Lord.
  • Gimme a kiss honey buns
  • "While the lord is out hunting, the lady attempts to seduce Gawain, however, and on the first two days accepts only kisses, which he gives to the Lord..." (216).
  • Uh, no thank you. you're married to that guy
  • The wife gives Gawain a scarf, that he believes will protect him from death. 
  • "For the man who goes to battle in this green lace, as long as he keeps it looped around him, no man under heaven can hurt him" (lines 233-234). 
  • Forgive me, for I have stolen
  • The Green Knight goes to kill Gawain, but only maims him. After this, Gawain confesses he stole the scarf, and offers to allow the Knight a second blow.  The Knight, seeing that Gawain has passed his test, allows him to live
  • "Since now you're confessed so clean, acknowledging sins... I consider you polished as white and as perfectly clean" (lines 383-385).
