Earnest Shackleton was an important and inspirational explorer of the 20th century.
Early on he was a confident reader with an excited imagination.
He had a passion for the Merchant Navy and joined at the age of just 16.
He led his second expedition in 1908, he reached the South Pole on the 15th of January 1909.
After he returned on land he was awarded a medal given to him by The Royal Geographical Society. He was then known by the name Sir Earnest Shackleton.
He led yet another expedition in 1914. It is known as one of Shackleton's greatest success as his ship became trapped. The team had to then leave the ship and were stranded on the ice for months. Incredibly all of his team including his self all survived.
