Ada is a 11 year old girl who has club foot. She lives in a small, poor town in London, during the 1940's. Her mother has kept her inside her whole life because she is ashamed of her. Her only other family is Jamie her younger brother.
The protagonist of this story is Ada. She lives in a very small flat above the bar where her mom works. She has clubfoot, that means her foot is positioned awkwardly. Her mom has abused and neglected her, but she is smart, strong, and kind.
The two antagonists are Her Mom and Hitlers war. Her Mom has always forced her to go into there cabinet. World War 2 was forcing kids to leave and go into the country. Jamie was leaving, but she wasn't. That meant Jamie would be safe, but Ada wouldn't.
An external conflict would be the war. The Nazis were preparing to bomb London. That's why the kids were being sent away. Children were being sent to the countryside where the people hoped it would be safe. All except for Ada. She was forced to stay.
The rising action is when Ada and Jamie, meet Ms. Smith. They ran from their mom and joined a school that sent them to the country where there were no bombs. They did not like it. They thought it was bad for them.
The climax is when Susan (their keeper) learns to love them. She comforts Ada and takes care of Ada by taking her to the doctor and prepares a surgery for her foot. Takes care of Jamie, and helps with butter, the horse. Ada actually starts to feel at home
