Rhea Silvia was forced by her brother to be a Vestal Virgin, a priestess of Vesta, after his inherited control.
Rhea Silvia conceived the two boys, Romulus and Remus. Normally a Vestal Virgin who would do this would be put to death, but due to the fear of upsetting their possible father, thought to be a god, they ordered the death of the children instead.
King Amulius imprisoned Rhea and told a servant to either be buried alive, through exposure, or to be thrown into the Tiber River.
The slave decided to spare the boys their lives, and put them into a basket float safely down the Tiber River.
The boys were discovered by a she-wolf after getting caught in the roots of a fig tree. They were protected by the river god, Tibernus. They were suckled by the wolf before being fed by a woodpecker.
Then, they were discovered by both a shepherd and his wife, Faustulus and Acca Larentia. The boys grew to be shepherd like their adoptive parents.
