  • PERIPETEIA - A reversal of fortune
  • The flaw that causes Oedipus' downfall is trying to avoid the prophecy. He will kill his father and marry his mother.
  • ANAGNORISIS - The moment when the hero makes a critical discovery
  • Oedipus' pride gets in the way of seeing the truth, that he killed his father and married his mother.
  • NEMESIS - A fate that cannot be avoided
  • The reversal of fortune is that Oedipus was king and a hero, but now he is the one that murdered Laius.
  • CATHARSIS - The feeling of pity of fear the audience experiences after the hero's fall
  • The moment Oedipus makes his discovery is when the messenger tells him that he was the baby that Jacosta gave away. He realizes that he has now killed Laius and is married to his mother.
  • The fate that cannot be avoided is the curse put on by Apollo.
  • The audience feels pity for Oedipus after he figured out the truth about his life. Also, that Jacosta killed herself and Oedipus then stabbed his eyes out.
