The protagonist is Death's godson, and is a wealthy doctor and physician, working with Death to make his wealth, and does not have limits to his greed. “If I could but cheat Death for once,” thought the physician, “he is sure to take it ill if I do, but, as I am his godson, he will shut one eye; I will risk it.”
Death is the antagonist, and the godfather to the Godson. Not initially a antagonist, he is fair to everyone, knowing everything must come to an end, even his own godson. “I am Death, and I make all equal.” Then said the man, “Thou art the right one, thou takest the rich as well as the poor, without distinction; thou shalt be godfather.
The major conflict in the story is the protagonist fighting his own greed. After he cheated death the first time, Death gave him a fair warning, and the Godson continued to try and cheat death, resulting in his doom. ''Immediately the physician fell on the ground, and now he himself was in the hands of Death. ''
