  • William The Conqueror
  • Henry II
  • YOU DARE DEFY ME?!?!?!
  • John The Cruel
  • Throw him in the dungeon guards!
  • On Christians day 1066, William took the crown of England after defeating another person who also wanted power at the battle of Hastings. He had the Domesday census taken to learn about his kingdom. This helped William and future kings build a successful system of collecting taxes, which would help them build up their kingdom.
  • The Magna Carta
  • Henry was a energetic and smart king. He expanded royal power and unified the legal system although by doing so he built up friction between him and the church by claiming the right to try clergy in royal courts.
  • Edward I
  • John was the son of Henry and when he ruled the kingdom he was cruel and greedy. He was untrustworthy and oppressive and angered many of the nobles. During his reign he faced 3 great enemies: The English nobles, the Pope Innocent III, Philip I. He lost his battles with all of them and was forced to sign the Magna Carta
  • Hugh Capet
  • The Magna Carta was a list of feudal rights which made it so everyone was protected under the law and that the monarchs also had to obey the laws. Taxes could not be raised without the approval of the council.
  • Edward I created the Parliament which evolved from the Great Council. The great council led to the unification of England.
  • He was elected King by the feudal lords because he was weak, posed no threat to them, and easy to manipulated. He slowly extended royal power and made the throne hereditary.
