Storyboard Text

  • The Aztecs were nomadic people. They were constantly moving from place to place, never settling down anywhere
  • The priests of the Aztecs said that they would build a great capital in the place where they would find a sign from the gods
  • The Aztecs found an eagle perched on a cactus, eating a serpent, which is what they believed was the sign from the gods. They then settled near a tiny island called Azcapotzalco in Lake Texcoco
  • The area that the Aztecs settled in was very swampy, therefore making space very limited so the Aztecs went to work taking the soil from the bottom of the lake to the surface and making floating gardens called Chinampas
  • The people of Tenochtitlan found that a lot of the animals and creatures in the lake such as duck, fish, salamanders, larvae of insects and even a gooey algae in the lake could be served as food and used in trade
  • Because of the many goods that The Aztecs were able to trade, they became very powerful and successful, and that is why we still study them to this day
