When the Civil War began, the North was mainly a industrial place and the South was a a farming type of area and the South didn't have as any supplies for war as the North did.
In the Battle of Bull Run, the North went up to the capital of the newly succeeded South to fight them. The North thought that this would be an easy victory, but they were wrong. The South fought back and the North had to retreat.
