A young pretty woman, whom wishes to be wealthy and noticed gets exactly opposite of that and is born into a middle class family which she deems poor.
I must be introduced to her.
She's the prettiest thing I've laid eyes on.
The woman, Mathilde, recieves tickets to a party from her husband. with his surprise she demands that she must get a new dress and jewelry in order to go, and so she looks for such things with a small gift of 400 francs from him.
Now with her new dress, she is still upset for not having any jewelry. So in order to get some she goes to visit her rich friend, Madame Forestier, and asks for some of her jewelry. Madame Forestier instantly says yes, and lets Mathilde borrow a diamond necklace.
Matthilde and her husband go to the party, and Matthilde is the center of attention the whole night. When the party is over though they swiftly leave to soon realize Matthilde has lost the diamond necklace.
In a panicked mode Matthilde makes up a lie to her friend that she only is repairing the necklace. Now with the cover up Matthilde and her husband search for a replica. Even though they notice they can't afford the necklace they put a down payment on it anyways.
After returning the replica to her friend successfully, Matthilde soon goes into financial problems. Over a spand of 10 years was what it took Matthilde and her husband to finally pay back the charges on the necklace. Matthilde in the process lost her house, maid, and had to take up a growling job, but in the end she learned her lesson of greed.
