Storyboard Text

  • Melantho Meets the Stranger and they Talk
  • "I wonder, why do you hold such an angry grudge against me? Is it because I am dirty, wear foul clothing upon me, and go about as a public beggar?"
  • "Stranger, do you mean to stay here all night and bother us by poking all over the house and spying upon the women?"
  • Penelope Assures the Suitors and Odysseus Questions her
  • "'O repected wife of Odysseus, son of Laertes, you will not stop asking me about my origin? Then I will tell you, but you will give me over to sorrows even more than I have..."
  • "Young men, my suitors now that the great Odysseus has perished, wait, though you are eager to marry me, until I finish this web, so that my weaving will not be useless and wasted."
  • Penelope Tests the Stranger and Befriends him when he describes Odysseus
  • "Lady, it is difficult to tell you, with so much time between, for now it is the twentieth year since he was in that place and went away from my country. Still, I will tell you, in the way my heart imagines him."
  • "Now my friend, I think I will give you a test, to see if it is true that there, and with his godlike companions, you entertained my husband, as you say you did, in your palace."
  • Melantho asks the stranger why he is staying at their house and bothering all of the women there, and he responds by wondering if she has such a grudge towards him because he is dirty and begging.
  • Penelope speaks to the suitors and tells them that they won't be able to marry her until she is finished weaving the quilt for her father, and then the stranger asks her why she keeps questioning his origin and if he actually entertained Odysseus.
  • Penelope tests the stranger to see if he was really there to entertain her husband, and he responds by telling her how he imagined what Odysseus looks like and she agrees and becomes his friend.
