In a London office on 211b Baker street Dr.Watson and Sherlock Holmes examine a cane. They begin to examine the cane and make assumptions as to who it belonged to. This chapter introduces us to the characters setting up the plot for the rest of the story.
Moritimer gives Dr.Watson and Sherlock at the Baskerville mansion a manuscript telling the story of the hound. The manuscript talked about a Baskerville named Hugo that was obsessed with a girl in the town. One night he kidnapped her but she escaped. Hugo called the hound to find her scent.
Mortimer shows Sherlock the scene of the death in the woods of the Baskerville mansion. Sherlock indicates that paw prints were away from the body. Mortimer suggest that it was an unnatural force that killed him.
