  • This is a story about a boy named Dylan who suffers from the most common form child maltreatment, neglect (Stoltenborgh, Bakermans-Kranenburg, and Van Ijzendoorn, 2013). Neglect is when a child is deprived of the necessary basic needs essential to life such as physical, educational, emotional and medical needs which can severely affect development (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2013).
  • Long Term Impact of Neglect
  • Ever since Dylan was young, he was parked in front of the television limiting his interactions with others (Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, 2012).
  • Long Term Impact of Neglect
  • Dylan's nickname at school was 'stinky' due to his bad breath, body odour, and smelly clothes, other kids would avoid him (Minty and Pattinson, 1994). Dylan regularly goes hungry at lunchtime, he has tried to ask his classmates to spare him money or food, but everyone rejects him, resulting in Dylan having to steal (Australia. Department of Child Protection and Family Support., 2012).
  • The Association of Neglect and Anti-Social Behaviour
  • Dylan has trouble with learning especially in subjects like Maths and English (Echenrode, Laird, and Doris, 1993) because of this he will have to repeat his grade (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2013)!
  • You have to repeat!
  • Due to Dylan's social withdrawal and limited interactions he has difficulties with emotional expression and regulation of appropriate emotions (Hildyard and Wolfe, 2002; Shipman, Edwards, Brown, Swisher, and Jennings, 2005).
  • Haha! Why is she crying?
  • As a result of Dylan's cognitive difficulties and attachment issues, he has a substance abuse problem which he views as psychological escape from his problems (Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education, et al. 1993, pp. 208-231).
