  • The butler act was passed in 1925 which forbade the teaching of evolution in public schools. 
  • John T Scopes was asked to admit to teaching evolution in class.
  • Scopes agreed to admit to teaching evolution as a publicity stunt for the town of Dayton, Tennessee.
  • The trial went on for 8 days. The jury began debating about evolution even though they were supposed to be deliberating whether or not Scopes should be prosecuted.
  • After the 8 days of deliberation the jury found Scopes guilty of violating the Butler Act. He was charged with a $100 fine.
  • The schools were instantly affected by the trial. All references of evolution were erased from textbooks.
