The Holocaust was beginning and it wasn't as safe for Jews to be out because of all the German soldiers. Kids had to be in from playing at 6 and it was important to prepare before being deported to a concentration camp.
Eli and his family get to Auschwitz and his mother and sister were sent to the crematorium due to the fact that they were females. They were forced to work if they didn't want to die. They get separated into blocks and branded with needles. The goal was to work the Jews to death.
A lot of people have given up at this point and ask for Kaddish to be said upon them. They're starting to get less rations of food and trying to stay alive and strong is the goal, since death is always their threat.
All of the Jews are being transported and were loaded up on carriages in the cold weather. Thee soldiers in charge said whoever was dead would be thrown off to make more room but it didn't do them any good because they were all freezing and fighting each other over foo.
Once they were off the carriages, they were demanded to trail along in the freezing snow ad were warned that if they slept in the cold weather for too long they would never wake up due to their exhaustion, it was like arguing with death itself. Elie's father gets really weak but he wants to stay by his side because he still has faith that he'll live to see the end with him.
Elie's father was sent to the crematorium by the soldiers overnight because of the bad condition he was in. Elie didn't think anything mattered once his father passed because that was the only reason he stayed strong and kept going. Liberation was coming so the soldiers were trying to kill as many people as possible but Elie claimed his freedom.
