I'm Ishmael and this is Leslie, She's been patiently taking care of me at this place, called the Benin home. Since the war ended she's been helping me with my withdraws, anger outbursts, sad moments and keeping myself healthy mentally and physically.
I lost most of my family and friends after fighting in the war, I don't have many role models. No adult has proven themselves like Leslie has. She is like a Mom to me, I love her. One early Monday morning she gave me some of what could be life changing news. Someone wanted to meet me and eventually take me to their home. I wouldn't be here much at all anymore.
My Uncle Tommy, Who i've never met before wanted to come visit me every once in a while till I got to really know him and feel comfortable living with him. Months go by and we both make a decision that can turn my whole life around.
Today's the day. My Uncle Tommy is on his way to pick me up and bring me to my new family and home. I'm feeling sad and i'm trying to hold back the tears from running down my face while saying goodbye to Alhaji, Mohamed, Mambu and Leslie. I could never see the people I'm closed to again. But I'm looking at this like a new positive opportunity.
Its hard to let go of the ones you love most, which is the hardest part for me. I have to adjust to a whole new family, lifestyle, new school and many more. This is a new chapter and I hope it'll only get better from here.
