In 1519 Hernan Cortes arrived in Mexico after the King Charles the first ordered him not to go. Cortes would have to come back to Spain with something or he would be in trouble for disobeying the King.
Cortes had met many different tribes throughout his journey. Some tribes he made allies with and others enemies. Several tribes mentioned the Aztecs to Cortes. The Aztecs were an advanced civilization located in a large marshy valley. Cortes had to find them.
I'll be back!
When Cortes arrived at Tenochtitlan the Aztecs thought he was their god as of Aztec the prophices once said. Moctezuma, their leader, invited Cortes to the royal temple. Cortes thought this was great and that he could manipulate the Aztecs in some way.
During Cortes's meeting with Moctezuma, Cortes took this opportunity to capture him. Cortes also took his daughter, La Malinche, and used her as a translate and to manipulate the tribe.
After a little while, Cortes had to leave Mexico after getting the message that Spanish troops were coming for him. He left Alvarado in charge in hopes that everything would be the same when he returned.
Cortes returned to Mexico only to find out that there was a rebellion! Alvarado failed to keep the tribe under control. Cortes and his men had to flee Tenochtitlan.
