Ivan Iv, came to throne in 1533, when he was three years old. His young life were struggles for power among Russia's landowning nobles. He was not a absolute ruler.
When he was 16, Ivan seized power and had himself crowned czar. This title meant caesar, he was the first Russian ruler officially.
1547-1560 was a good period for Ivan. He won great victories, added land to Russia, gave Russia a code of laws and ruled absolute just.
Ivans bad period began in 1560 after his wife died. He accused the boyars of poisoning her. He made a police force to kill all traitors
Using his secret police, Ivan executed many boyars and their families. Ivan got there estates and gave them to nobles.
In 1581, he killed his own son, Ivan died three years later and he only had one son left that took the throne and ruled.
