  • The opposition of the Creoles against the Peninsular Spaniards. The huge gap in wealth distribution between rich and poor. Great discontent amongst the population due to the harsh caste system.
  • Third Phase
  • On 16 September, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla formed the first independent Mexican military force together with Ignacio Allende, and issued the “Grito de Dolores”
  • Fourth Phase
  • Father José María Morelos y Pavón assumed leadership. He led guerrilla-style operations at the head of a small army. "During this period, the historical battle of alhóndiga of granaditas happened"
  • Aftermaths of the war for Mexican Independence
  • This phase was characterized by attacks that proceeded from uncoordinated rebel bands led by guerilla chieftains such as Guadalupe Victoria and Vicente Guerrero.
  • The “Army of the 3 Guarantees” entered Mexico City in September 1821, symbolizing the end of the struggle for Independence.
  • Mines had been exploited to finance war activities. Cultivation lands and agriculture were in complete abandonment. Life expectancy dropped to 35 years old.
