One major theme in the story Monsters by Rod Sterling is that Humans aren't the real monsters. All the aliens did was turn off their electricity and they all started going crazy. It started with a streak of light over in the sky. Then their electricity went off and they started trying to figure out what was happening. When Steve tried to drive to the police station his car wouldn't start. But when Les Goodman tried his car it worked. Later on in the story Pete Van Horn comes back from the other town and Charlie shot him. The residents of Maple street then blamed Tommy of being the monster and as he runs to his house, Maple Street turns into a war zone and the residents start harming each other. Then you see aliens in front of their spaceship talking about how they are more like Maple Street and they'll target those towns next. The theme, again, is that Monsters are not the real threat. But mankind is it's own worst enemy.
