Rip Van Winkle was "a simple good natured man; he was moreover a kind neighbor, and an obedient, henpecked husband". Rip lived with his wife and family but really focused on anyone except who he needed to and was obsequious.
Rip did not get along with his wife much of the time and he thought she was a virago. " Morning, noon, and night, her tongue was incessantly going". She always bothered him and embarassed him around his friends.
While taking his dog on a walk Rip encountered a dutch fellow and after having a mysterious drink with the fellow "his eyes swam in his head-his head gradually declined and he fell into a deep sleep".
Hello there. Who are you?
When Rip awoke he was befuddled , but what he didn't know was that he had been asleep for 20 years.
"Surely I have not slept here all night?"
When Rip reached the village he was perplexed since everything had changed. There were more people and homes and when he went to his house it was decaying.
"Surely this is the village- but everything is so strange"
Once Rip realized what had happened he lived out the remainder of his days with his daughter and "resumed his walks and habits". But without his wife he was able to continue his idle days and lived out as a legend.
