  • John Proctor as a Tragic Hero
  • But I love you, Proctor!!!
  • I am a hard working man, with a wife and children.
  • Hamartia: John Proctor's flaw is that he is in an affair with Abigail.
  • Hubris: John has too much pride to confess his adultery.
  • I cannot put down my name for everyone to see! I beg of you, leave me my name!!!
  • You must confess your sins before the church and court!
  • Peripeteia: John no longer sees himself as a good man, but does not want to ruin his name either. He will be hanged.
  • Oh John, please confess. They will not hang me, for I am with child.
  • Abigail never loved me! She is a lying thief! How dear she! My name is my name!
  • Anagnorisis: John realizes that he does not want his children to have a bad reputation in the future, so he refuses to sign his name. He forgets about Abigail.
  • John Proctor is hanged for not confessing.
  • Nemesis: John cannot escape his sins. He must pay for them.
  • Catharsis: John is dead. Abigail leaves town. Elizabeth and some others are disheartened and feel that John did not deserve to be hanged.
  • I shall run away with all my uncle's money!
  • Oh John! Poor, poor John!
