  • In one hand he held a bottle of liniment, and with the other he rubbed his spine.
  • Crooks pressed forward some kind of private victory.
  • Candy came in but he was still embarrassed. "You got a nice cozy little place in here,"
  • In 1619 the first black slaves from Africa are brought to America, in Virginia, and sold
  • Crooks stood up from his bunk and faced her. "I had enough," he said codly. "you got no rights comin' in a coloured man's room.
  • In April, 1865, The North wins the American civil war
  • Crooks had reduced himself to nothing. There was no personality, no ego-nothing  to arouse either like or dislike... his voice was toneless.
  • In December, 1865, The 13th Amendment to the Constitution bans slavery
  • Poured a little liniment in his pink palm...he fell slowly to rubbing his back
