Storyboard Text

  • Hello, I am Jack, the Ugly Behemoth.
  • Today we will be discussing ozone, and what happens when it interacts with living organisms.
  • While Oxygen usually takes the form of a diatomic gas, under certain conditions it can form in groups of three atoms, forming ozone.
  • Most ground level ozone is formed as a product of reacting nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds.
  • These ingredients come from both man made and natural processes.
  • These processes include lightning, burning of natural and fossil fuels, and the production and destruction of paints and plastics.
  • One problem caused by ground level ozone is that is causes lungs to function less efficiently.
  • Increased ozone levels in the UK killed over 460 people in the summer of 2006. This is because heat causes plants to absorb ozone more slowly.
  • To conclude, ozone is damaging to humans and other animals and should be kept out of the troposphere.
