Storyboard Text

  • Hello, my name is Jason and today we will be discussing stratospheric ozone
  • Ozone is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms.
  • It is formed by ultraviolet radiation splitting O2 gas into individual atoms, which then bond with other O2 molecules.
  • The function of ozone in the stratosphere is to block harmful solar radiation while letting helpful light rays through.
  • Unfortunately, certain molecules called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFC's, actively destroy ozone molecules. This leaves living organisms on earth's surface vulnerable to harmful radiation.
  • The main sources of CFC's are aerosol  propellants, refrigerants, and cleaning solvents.
  • PIZZA TIME
  • CFC's break up ozone by stripping off an oxygen molecule. This turns it back to diatomic oxygen gas.
