the platypus has a couple gene variations, one would be in their immune system that has failed to adapt and change over change due to these specific platypus being trapped on an island have resorted to becoming imbred. this is a problem because any new disease could wipe them off of the island
On another island the platypus have had a chance to introduce differnt platypus from neighboring countrys this has resulted in a more diverse immune system, it is better built up and can combat a new disease if it arises
these variations of immune systems are passed from parent to offspring. on island A the offspring will have the same immune system as their parents . on island B they could have a combination of father and mothers immune system
The selection process would be if a disease or infection arrives on the island that island A platypus is not ready to fight off but island Bs is due to a more complex immune system. this could wipe the population of platypus off of island A
over generations one island will have the same immune system and might change very little due to environment. In the other case different variations are inherited
