The entire story takes place in a small town, and the atmosphere is dark and gloomy. There is much talk of death, much selfishness, and foreshadowing. Religion also plays a big role. It mostly takes place at school.
Damsel in Distress
The protagonist of the story is Carrie. She is tormented her entire life, by both students at school, and her family. After a while, she finds out she has telepathy, and uses it to harm others.
Emotions play a critical role in Carrie's story. Because of her uncontrollable desire for revenge, she murders almost an entire school because of what they did to her. Even though murder is bad, she did it anyway.
For most stories, the Damsel in Distress is a side character that needs saved by a main character. But in this case, Carrie is her own Damsel in Distress, and she instead saves herself.
Foreboding in Gothic Literature can be identified with events of tragedy or acts of despair. An example of foreboding in Carrie is when a few kids kill a few farm animals, and freeze the animals' blood.
The definition of Decay follows a pattern of events. Normally, it starts with something great and well known, but slowly goes downhill or fades. In Carrie, it starts the story off sad and at the bottom, but eventually things become great, only to fall again.
