Storyboard Text

  • On May 5, 1789 King Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates General for the fist time since 1614. He called this meeting to discuss the great financial issues rising in France.
  • Welcome to the meeting of the Estate General. We are here today to discuss the financial issues of our great country.
  • King Louis decided to put taxes on the first estate, or the nobles, in order to help with the debt.
  • I have decided to tax the tax the first estate.
  • The nobles did not want to be taxed and insisted that the clergy, religious leaders, be taxed instead.
  • Why would you not tax the clergy instead?
  • The clergy would not be taxed either. The suggested that the taxes already put on the third party ,or common-folk, be increased.
  • Our money is strictly for religious purposes. We say increase the taxes on the third estate.
  • The third party would not have their taxes increased either. They wanted equal taxation for all.
  • We are taxed enough! All estates must be taxed fairly.
  • The meeting had failed and no one had come to a resolution on what was to be done.
  • What have I done?
