- After getting my birthday money, I thought about getting you a baton.
- Why did Scout have to toss my baton like that after I bought it for her!
- From now on, Jem, I'm going to have you learn how to read this book correctly.
- Jem receives money for his 12th, in which he uses to buy a miniature train and a twirling baton for Scout.
- I'm sorry to say that Mrs. Dubose has passed away that I heard over the phone call, so I brought some candy for you guys.
- At Mrs. Dubose's house, Jem sees that Scout isn't on the porch, so he snaps her baton.
- Mrs. Dubose starts teaching Jem to read ever since he misbehaved about the baton situation.
- A month later, the phone rings and Atticus goes back to Mrs. Dubose's house with a box of candy and explains that Mrs. Dubose died since she was a morphine addict.
