Storyboard Text

  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • Figurative Language
  • Symbolism took a big part in this story. There were many symbols that played a big role in the story By Shirley. And examples of symbols are the Black Box,Three legged stool, and The Lottery.
  • Tone/Theme
  • One thing that stood out as imagery to me is the black box. According to the text,"The black box grew shabbier each year; by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained. ". lines 64-67 This quote showed imagery and showed how the black box was old but still very functional.

  • An example of figurative language that took place in the story is personification. In the text, " School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them." This is personification because liberty cant sit which is why it is a figure of speech.

  • I would say that the main theme of this story besides tradition is unexpectedness. I say this because in a lottery like the on in the story you dont know if your name will come up, and its like a gamble where you cant predict the furure plus you dont know what to expect. Therefore unexxpectedness is a big theme in the story The Lottery.
