Symbolism took a big part in this story. There were many symbols that played a big role in the story By Shirley. And examples of symbols are the Black Box,Three legged stool, and The Lottery.
One thing that stood out as imagery to me is the black box. According to the text,"The black box grew shabbier each year; by now it was no longer completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained. ". lines 64-67 This quote showed imagery and showed how the black box was old but still very functional.
An example of figurative language that took place in the story is personification. In the text, " School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them." This is personification because liberty cant sit which is why it is a figure of speech.
I would say that the main theme of this story besides tradition is unexpectedness. I say this because in a lottery like the on in the story you dont know if your name will come up, and its like a gamble where you cant predict the furure plus you dont know what to expect. Therefore unexxpectedness is a big theme in the story The Lottery.
