  • Direct characterization 1: “She was unhappy as if she had really fallen from a higher station, since with women there is neither caste nor rank” (de Maupassant). The author is saying that she unhappy because she is not rich. Direct characterization 2:“She was prettier than any other women present, elegant, graceful, smiling and wild with joy” (de Maupassant). At the ball she was happy because s he has what she always wanted to be a higher social class.
  • Indirect characterization 1: “No; there’s nothing more humiliating than looking poor among other women who are rich.” (de Maupassant). After her husband gave her the invitation, throw a fit because she is comparing herself to other women about her look and riches. indirect characterization 2: “Only I have no gown, and therefore, I can't go to this ball.” (de Maupassant). she was upset and angry because she has no gown. She was thinking more about how she looks to everyone then be appreciated that she was invited.
