Why can't I sit there?
Ethos is the use of moral character to persuade others in an argument. In Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "I Have a Dream," he uses ethos when talking about freedom in our country. Martin Luther King refers to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and says, "They were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fair heir."
Pathos is used in persuasive speech as an appeal to the emotions. Pathos was used many times throughout the"I Have a Dream" speech. One of the times pathos is used is when Martin Luther King says, 'We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their self-hood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating: "For Whites Only."
Logos is the use of logic and reasoning to persuade the audience. Logos can be a very useful tool because you can 'prove' an argument through logical reasoning. In the last paragraph of the speech, Martin Luther King states, "...We will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing the words of the old Negro spiritual."
