Storyboard Text

  • This is Mai-Ling. She is a Chinese little girl who is often very sad, because she has no siblings, due to the One-Child Policy in China.
  • Why did we have to stay in China! That poor little son of mine could have been with us, if not for the one child policy! The sanction fine caused our debt! We shouldn't have lied about his health.
  • Why is Mai-Ling always so sad and distant?
  • Mai-Ling didn't get to go to school very often because her parents didn't have enough money for school fees at the time.
  • Mai-Ling's father had been working at her school and they offered to teach her for free until they had the sufficient funds to pay her fees
  • Eventually, her school fees were paid and she stopped worrying about her future without good education. She made friends, but she was still secretly lonely at home.
  • When Mai-Ling grew up, she had a daughter, but both her and her husband were only children the one child policy exception applied to their family.
