Madame Loisel is a women who lives in France in the 19th century and is unemployed,her husband works as a clerk and is determined to make her happy.
Madame Loisel is very unhappy with her social life and wants more wealth, she dreams of expensive clothes,food,and fancy dinner parties with other wealthy and important people.
Her husband gets an invitation for his wife to attend a dinner party to make her feel more wealthy, but she complains that she has nothing to wear or any jewelry to go with it. Loisel asks her husband to buy a new gown and her wealthy friend if she can borrow a piece of jewelry so she doesn't look less rich than the other women, and her friend lets her borrow a diamond necklace.
After Madame returns home from the party she immediately notices that her friends diamond necklace was missing.Her husband tells Loisel to lie to her friend and say that its missing but is getting repaired.
The couple finds a jeweler who says he can make a replica of the necklace for 36,000, and because they were not very wealthy it costs them 10 years worth of working to pay the jeweler every penny. She gives her friend the fake necklace but she doesn't question it.
After 10 years of paying off the necklace Loisel sees her wealthy friend at the park she was looking very young and fresh unlike Loisel who had been washed up and tired all these years.She confronts her friend and finally confesses what happend that night and about her poverty, when her friend tells her that the necklace was infact fake and only costs 500 francs.
