  • McKinley sent a list of demands to Spain: compensation for the U.S.S. Maine, an end to reconcentration camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independence.
  • The U.S. signed the treaty of Paris in December of 1898. In the treaty, the Spanish government recognized Cuba’s independence.
  • In return for a payment of twenty million dollars, Spain also gave up the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific island of Guam to the U.S.
