Robert Rogers and his 184 men depart from Fort Edward to conduct patrols north to the vicinity of Fort Carillon and Crown Point on Lake Champlain(March,1758)
The rangers,after deciding to push close inland to the west circling bald mountain , see the enemy in their sights . They fire , the initial battery killing 40 Indians . The enemy retreated but unknowingly to rogers a 200 plus reaction force of French marines, Canadian militia,and indians were just 15 minutes away .
Rogers force gets overwhelmed by chaotic gunfire . In haste , he develops the idea to order his rangers to high ground of bald mountain . He loses about 50 men in doing so . This was it , their last stand . The opposing force surrounds them , the night is coming in . Overwhelmed outgunned , and and out of luck , rogers team is forced to scatter . All of his men going into different directions in the dead of night . The only survivor living to tell it being Rogers .
