Montresor thought that he needed to kill Fortunato because he had done him wrong. he was motivated by the fact that Fortunato had insulted him and also probably had some mental problems.
His revenge was not justified. Although we aren't given context, we know that Montressor killed because Fortunato insulted him. While we don't know how bad it was, killing was not right, and he could have just talked with him.
"Fortunato had insulted me. So I vowed revenge. Not in so many words, of course. Never aloud."
