The Archduke of Austria and his wife decided to go to Sarajevo, Bosnia. People lined the streets to see them, despite concerns for their safety.
Amongst those friendly faces in the street, there were 6 different men all from the "Black Hand Gang", a terrorist organisation that hated the Austrian Empire. They all had weapons, and poison to drink in order to avoid being caught.
A terrorist threw a hand grenade at Ferdinands car but missed, and it hit the car behind, injuring people. Ferdinand sped off, unharmed.
That day, Franz Ferdinand had planned to go to the town hall, but he felt bad for those injured in the car behind and he decided to go and visit them in hospital.
I'm going to the hospital!
Okay honey bear
No boy! The hospital!
But, no one told Franz Ferdinand's driver of the route change, and he began to drive to the town hall as planned. He looked for a spot to turn around and pulled into a cafe car park...
Terribly sorry your magesty...
Amazingly, one of the 6 terrorists named Gavrilo Princip came out of the cafe with his target right in front of him! He pulled out his firearm and shot Ferdinand twice, killing him instantly. Princip was caught by police and was sentenced to 20 years in jail. This sparked tension between Austria and Serbia, who would eventually declare war on each other.
