direct-The author tells the trait of the character.
WOW! That fortunato is amazing.
He's so cool.
I admire that man.
speech-what does the character say? How does he speak?
A very good joke indeed, an excellent jest.
Thoughts- what does the character think about issues? How does the character feel about issues?
"He had a weak point this fortunato...He was a man to be respected and even feared." He is powerful but not perfect.1
effect on others-How do others respond to the character? what do others think about the character?
What a jerk
"A very good joke indeed, an excellent jest..." he is in denial because of his ego. 6
Actions-what dos the character do? How does the character behave?
"Fortunato stood stupidly, bewildered." He was astonished. Shocked that something like that would happen to him.5
Looks-What doe the character look like? how does he dress?
"You are rich, respected... you are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed." Others like Fortunato or are jealous of him. Montresor is jealous of Fortunato because he has what he once did.
"As he stepped unsteadily forward...finding in an instant he had reached the extremity of the niche...finding his progress arrested by the rock, stood stupidly bewildered." Fortunato is a gullible alcoholic because he believes there is a barrel of wine in a small dug out hole in the wall and is willing to go in the hole for it.
Go on its in there.
"The man wore motley. He had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells." Fortunato is a fool- he is dressed as a fool. He proves himself to be a festive character dressing up for carnival.
