  • Setting
  • Little Rock is a small town in Arkansas. This tiny town talked tons. Little Rock was small but mighty, it took a lot to bring them down.
  • Protagonist
  • Melba Pattillo Beals was a young African American girl born on December 7,1941. She always had bigger dreams and one day in her African American school she was asked a question. Did she want to attend Central High, an all white school. She gave the answer yes, and her life flipped a switch after that.
  • Get out of our school you n*****!
  • 3 years later Melba is apart of the integration process. She now attends Central High School. Students hate her, even teachers dislike having her at the school. Melba constantly gets bullied. Her new life was like a War she couldn't win.
  • Antagonist/Conflict
  • Resolution/P.O.V
  • The students and segregationist were getting out of hand so guards were called in. The school was a rodeo, and they needed backup. Eventually things settled down, and little by little the guards had vanished.
  • How much more can I take in that school?
  • With the soldiers gone Melba didn't have a safety blanket around her anymore. She didn't think she could take and the bullies had gotten worse. All she could think about was finishing the school year. Many difficulties were faced by her and her family without the guards.
  • Plot/Mood/Tone
  • At the end of the year Melba had her 9 original friends that went through integration with her, and she befriended a white boy from school. One of the Little Rock nine members didn't graduate from Central however.It felt to Melba as though school had lasted for a billion years! She was glad it was over and what she accomplished. Melba learned that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. She couldn't have done it without her mother and her Grandma India
