Tom Walker, who lived in Boston, Massachusetts, and his wife were very gritty and money-cracy people. One day Tom was returning home but he decided to take a short cut. walking throw this route he kicked a skull and suddenly a man known as Old Scratch. Old Scratch or the Devil told Tom that he had a treasure from a dead pirate that he was named Kidd. Old Scratch offered Tom to have the treasure under certain conditions.
Tom could´t resist to keep the secret to himself and as soon he could he told his wife. Despite Tom told her that he was not going to take the deal, she toke all valuables from the house for the Devil and went to make a deal with him.
Since Tom´s wife did not return he sets out to find her and the valuables she took, but instead he finds her heart and liver. Tom is more upset by the loss of the valuables than the loss of his wife.
Tom decides he wants the treasure that the devil promise When Tom finds the devil he insists that to give him the money, Tom must use it in service to the devil. The devil first suggests Tom to become a slave trader, but Tom refused. Then he propose that Tom become a usurer, or corrupted money-liane Tom like this idea and accepted the deal with the devil.
Tom takes the money and sets up as a usurer in Boston. He loans money to people and then soaks them dry with his interests rates, and builds a house for himself. As he grows older, though, he worries that the bargain he made with the devil will result in being damned in the afterlife, so he becomes a religious, attending church and praying to God.
One day a poor land-jobber visits Tom and asks him to please give him more time to pay off his loan before foreclosing his mortgage, but he refuses. The man says that Tom has made so much money off him already, and when Tom says "the devil take me if I have made a farthing!" a black man on a black horse knocks on his door, come to take him away. The devil takes Tom Walker and when they go to his house, they find that all his possessions and the house burned down.
