While Mansa Musa was gone he left the kingdom in the hands of his son for over a year. During this time Timbuktu and Gow were added to his empire. He built New places, New Masque, New Libraries, New University, New Great Djinguereber Mosque (Jeango-whereber). It was located between the Niger River and Sahara Desert, it was a melting pot of culture exchange. Books were written and imported in Timbuktu and the city had a book coping industry at a time when books were hard to replace.
