  • The Battle of Fort Sumter was the official start of the Civil War. The Confederates attacked Fort Sumter and took over Charleston Harbor.

  • The Union first took the upper hand during this battle. But then reinforcements came for the Confederates and they won the war instead.

  • This battle was the start of Ulysses S. Grant Civil War career. This battle took place on the Tenneessee River. When Grant's troops arrived, there were already troops there and Grant's men were not needed.
