Storyboard Text

  • THE FIRST EXPERIMENT
  • What would happen if I tried to create hybrid pea plants? What would be the outcome?
  • Pea plants are the best to experiment with because they reproduce quickly, there are many different types, and they can cross and self-pollinate. I'm going to try to cross pollinate some peas to see the outcome!
  • Gregor Mendel tries to cross pollinate two kinds of pea plants, yellow seeded and green seeded . The color yellow for a seed is dominant, and the color green is recessive.
  • Mendel waits for a month. After 4 weeks, he checks on his thousands of hybrids but selects four plant to observe.
  • When I tried to cross pollinate yellow and green seeds, all of the offspring turned out to be yellow. I wonder why there were no green seeds?
  • THE SECOND EXPERIMENT
  • Let's see what happens when I self pollinate the plant; what will be the outcome?
  • Mendel decides to do this same experiment again. However, this time, he self pollinates the yellow-seeded  plant.
  • Mendel waits for a month. After 4 weeks, he selects four of the thousands of hybrids to observe back at the lab.
  • Wow! What is this I see? 25% of the offspring of the yellow seeded plant has green seeds. How has this happened?
  • Mendel was very confused. After some hard thinking, he finally came to a conclusion.
  • Mendel realized that the only explanation for this was that each organism has 2 sets of instructions for the same trait, one coming from the mother and one coming from the father. These instructions were genes, and the different types of genes were alleles. We can now see with a Punnett Square that there is a 25% chance for a heterozygous (one yellow and one green seed allele)  yellow seeded plant
