  • Millions of sperm are released into the woman's vagina. These sperm will swim up the vagina through the uterus and into the oviduct.
  • The sperm meet an egg. One sperm succeeds and the nucleus of the egg cell and the sperm cell fuse fertilisation.
  • Fertilised egg cell will travel down to the womb. It will then land in the uterus lining. This is called implantation.
  • The embryo will carry on growing.
  • At about 8 weeks a placenta and an umbilical cord will grow. This allows the baby to get nutrients.
  • The baby will continue to grow and its features will start to develop.
