  • The Slaves Decide to Rebel
  • I am not happy with the way I am being treated by the French.
  • Toussaint L'Ouverture Leads the Slaves
  • Follow me and I will lead you to freedom!
  • French Agree to Abolish Slavery
  • Fine, we surrender.
  • On August 21, 1791, slaves, unhappy with french rule, rebelled against plantation owners.
  • French Arrest L'Ouverture
  • The slaves were led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, a former slave with a military background.
  • Jean-Jacques Dessalines Takes Over
  • Follow me and I will finish leading you to freedom.
  • In 1801, after a series of defeats by L'Ouverture's troops, the French surrendered and agreed to abolish slavery.
  • Haitians Declare Themselves an Independent County
  • With this defeat, I declare us, Haiti, an independent nation!
  • However, in 1803, French forces arrested L'Ouverture and sent him to prison in France where he died ten months later.
  • Just kidding.
  • One of L'Ouverture's military generals, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, also a former slave, then took over leading the Haitians.
  • On January 1, 1804, after winning many battles against the French, Dessalines declared the nation independent and renamed it Haiti.
